I have been reading some information lately regarding High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT for short. There was an article in a running magazine recently that said if you build a strong body, it will carry you to the finish line. Adding circuit training and strength training not only will strengthen the joints and muscles, but it is said to help with your endurance.
I decided to join my local Crossfit gym to add to my training regimen for my half-marathon in July. I have been wanting to join a CrossFit gym for a while. One of my friends love their workouts because they incorporate different workouts every day so it does not feel monotonous. The muscle confusion with each different work out is said to keep you from reaching a plateau in your workout. I have only done the introductory class yesterday and it seems very interesting. I liked the fact that the guy who runs the place teaches us proper technique and gives us the “why’s” with the “how’s”. One thing I picked up in my first class was that I was doing my squats ineffectively and putting too much pressure on the balls of my feet. He had us perform squats facing a wall and used the wall as a guide to keep our knees from angling forward. It made the squat more difficult, but he explained to us that this will greatly help improve our technique and keep the load off the balls of our feet.
I do not know how my training schedule will be with the runs and CrossFit classes yet. I was planning on running three times a week, while going to CrossFit classes twice a week. I will figure it out and see what is best for my body. Hopefully, this will help get me to my goal of running the Half-Marathon in under two hours!
If you have incorporated some circuit or strength training to your running, please comment below and let me know how it has helped or hinder your runs!
