The TInkerbell Half Marathon Weekend

My Wife runs her first half marathon; The Disney Tinkerbell Half Marathon

I loved going to Disneyland as a kid. I grew up living in different parts of the Country (Army BRAT) and when we visited our relatives in Southern California, it was almost a given that we would also visit Mickey and His friends at Disneyland.  Now that I have a family of my own and we live 20 minutes from the Happiest Place on Earth, we are very lucky that we can go there on any given day! As much as I liked Disney growing up, my wife is a bigger fan than I am. She LOVES Disney! I think she owned all of the Disney movies when as a kid.

Last weekend (Jan 19-20) was the Tinkerbell Half Marathon Weekend at Disneyland. And what better way to introduce my wife to long distance running than to sign her up for a half marathon running through Disneyland!

2013 Tinkerbell Half Marathon

Actually, she was the one that wanted to sign up for her first half marathon and set it a goal of hers to complete the Tinkerbell Half. I must say, I was a little nervous for her to take on the race because she was never a runner growing up. But, I guess I was the same way when I first signed up for my first half marathon. I was not afraid of her not finishing it, I knew she had the heart and determination to complete the race, I was just afraid that she did not know how much training she needed to complete it injury-free. I didn’t want her to get hurt.

Here is a link to my wife’s blog, Candid Gems, and her post on running the Tinkerbell Half.

The months leading up to the half marathon, I tried to help my wife with a training plan that worked for me during my first race. I basically gave her a typical 12-week training plan. You can google 12-week half marathon training plan and find many different ones. It was difficult to implement the plan because of her work schedule. She was working long hours and was too tired to go out to run. So she maximized her weekend runs. The weekends leading up to the race, she ran 5 miles, 7 miles, 12 miles each saturday until the half marathon weekend.

You can prepare all you want, but it comes down to the actual race.

Needless to say, my wife finished her first Half Marathon! She did an awesome job! Her official time was 2:52:59. What’s more awesome is the fact that she went to work at 4am the next day and could walk without any limp! AND what’s more awesomer than that is the fact that I DARED HER TO DO THE DISNEYLAND Half Marathon Weekend DUMBO DARE (10K on Saturday, and Half Marathon on Sunday) in August! Yep!! That’s right! I got my wifey doing another half marathon this year! It’s part of her FIND YOUR GREATNESS New Year Resolution!

I’m soo Proud of her!!

It was a great family weekend. On Saturday, we signed up our 2-year-old in the kids 100 meter dash to get in on the action. The toddlers run with the parents and receive a medal at the end. It was so cute to see the little kiddos run in their costumes!

Thanks for stopping by everyone!! We can’t wait until August when Eva does another 100m Dash, but this time her lil sister Kalia will be joining her. I will be running the Half Marathon. And as for my wife, she’ll be running the Dumbo Dare! Have a great week everyone!

That’s so awesome!!!! How fun! I’ve always wanted to do that half but I heard that it doesn’t get you entrance to the park for the day….bummer ;( Congrats to your wife!

Yeah, They have you run through the park before they open so you can’t get on any of the rides. I heard of some people trying to hide in the bathrooms to stay in the park, but the cost of the race was a little more than the price of admission to the park!

How fun!! Congrats on your wife for her first half – and what a cute medal, too! I’m taking a break from races this year to pay off some stuff, but hopefully I’ll get back out there next year. Great blog – love reading about personal finance and running. :)

Hi Anna, Thanks for stopping by my blog!! I totally agree with you that paying off some stuff is important, but so is your health and well-being. Maybe you can budget some races this year to keep you motivated. I know that’s what keeps me going out on my runs! Without those goals, I probably wouldn’t be out at 5 am running in the dark!!
